Art comes into being in that abstract interval between a thought and reality, and no one – not even the artist who created it – can remeasure the influences that caused it.” (Edgar A. Payne)

“One of my mentors, Miss Pamela des Barres, imagines that if my images were music they would sound like Beethoven, Sinatra and the Beatles combined. I’ll take that.

It is my intent to deify and illuminates the ordinary and my desire is that you might find the beautiful in the ordinary, too.

Each photo is imbued with the mystery of love at first sight, infused with my present and my past and my daily rebirth into a new freedom, a swan dive, if you will, into the deep end of the pool, lit by color, texture, and emotion.”

Home Is Where The Herman Hesse Quote Is

Home Is Where The Herman Hesse Quote Is

“…Trees have long thoughts, long-breathing and restful, just as they have longer lives than ours. They are wiser than we are, as long as we do not listen to them. But when we have learned how to listen to trees, then the brevity and the quickness and the childlike hastiness of our thoughts achieve an incomparable joy. Whoever has learned how to listen to trees no longer wants to be a tree. He wants to be nothing except what he is. That is home. That is happiness.”
~ Hermann Hesse

Because I did something Crazy…

Because I did something Crazy...

Because I did something crazy (bought a house sight unseen from a post on Facebook and gave up my career and my 25 years of LA memories and connections to move to the middle of nowhere), because in order not to go crazy within the crazy of this move I started taking pictures with my iPhone (it was a two pronged habit- one it soothed and two it helped me tell you the story of where I landed when I moved to the middle of nowhere) and because people responded to my iPhone photography habit and the thousands of pictures I’ve posted on Facebook, I’ve had three iPhoneography shows with one more on deck and three web based articles about my special brand of crazy, I’ve also sold a bunch of these iPhone photos (printed on metal which pops the color because I am a color HOUND- want one? Let me know…). Crazy how all this good stuff happened because of a crazy decision.

Crazy cool.

Art In The Palm Of Your Hand…A Quote On iPhoneography By Brent Ridge, Fabulous Beekman Boys

Art In The Palm Of Your Hand...A Quote On iPhoneography By Brent Ridge, Fabulous Beekman Boys

Say “Hey” to my newest art collector, Kathryn Rehrig of Syracuse.

Kathryn saw my work at BANK Gallery in Sharon Springs and remembered The Beekman Boys post about my work on their blog- which featured the image Baby Steps- and requested a 10 x 10″ of Baby Steps (sold out in the 8 x 8″ series of 5 at Cherry Branch Gallery).

http://beekman1802.com/palm-of-your-hand/

Kathryn now owns Baby Steps 1 of 5. There are 4 left, pm me for more info before the 10 x 10″s are gone, too.

Baby Steps is an iPhonic image of a Chickadee landing in my hand to feed on a cold winter morning. I had been feeding the Chickadees out of a bird feeder but had forgotten to feed them for a day, this little one started flitting about and tapping me on the shoulder to remind me to fill the feeder. Before I did, I thought I’d see just how hungry he was and held out my hand full of seeds. He landed promptly, grabbed a sunflower seed, again and again. I love these little guys. Alas, it is summer and they can get their feed in other places so no more tapping me on my shoulder as I walk the dogs. Yes, I held the iphone/camera in one hand and the Chickadee in the other.

XO,

V

Origins at Carefree and Dunga Brook Diary

Origins at Carefree and Dunga Brook Diary

Discover Cooperstown’s best kept secret…Origins Cafe at Carefree Gardens.

Locally harvested food in a gorgeous greenhouse setting…this is the brainstorm of two equally gorgeous Cooperstown, NY, sisters.

http://www.celebrateorigins.com

Kristen and Dana Leonard have lovingly crafted a creative breakfast and lunch menu full of fresh local and organic ingredients.

Free spirits and staunch supporters of the Slow Food Movement, and of our local farmers, these women really know how to make things happen in a delicious way.

Lucky for me, the girls love my iphoneography and now Origins at Carefree Gardens keeps a mini gallery of my work on their cafe/greenhouse wall.

Address: 558 Beaver Meadow Rd, Cooperstown, NY 13326
Phone:(607) 547-9744

The floral and veg images were gathered from my daily walks around my 1820’s farmhouse and my drives around Otsego County, including the beautiful Cooperstown area.

Each 8 x 8″ photograph is infused directly to aluminum, float mounted and ready to hang, each one is signed and numbered (5 in a series).

The photos are limited editions and once the tourists arrive in C-Town they will sell like organic panini.

To view the photos, stop by the cafe and say hello to the Leonard sisters and their parents, Brent and Mary (who fell in love at Cornell and founded Carefree Gardens over 28 years ago).

Buy a plant, have a smoothie and a panini, and you will fall in love with the Leonard’s and C-Town, just like I did.

I document the rural life of central New York- those things that are closest to me…the flora, the fauna, the people. With people, I like to capture the portrait in a nano second, even if the sitters are posing…I wait for the moment between breaths, the second where the guard drops in order to capture the essence in front of me. iPhones are tricky in situations with movement so patience is key.

Praise for Vicki Whicker’s Images

“Looking doesn’t have to get any better than this, Vicki Whicker demonstrates a mastery of this genre through wit, heart, critical awareness, style, technique, and an infectious appreciation of her subject matter.” Kristen Henderson, Director Cherry Branch Gallery, Cherry Valley, NY

“Vicki Whicker has an eye and a heart that go together to create images which are both profoundly moving and beautiful. She has an especially fine and original take on micro images, showing us in close up magnification the glory of nature around her, things we would never see on our own.” Ronee Blakley, Actress/Singer/Songwriter, Los Angeles, CA

“Such an eye! We are blessed that Ms. Vicki Whicker is able to capture and reveal the glory of natural reality with such exquisite precision, taste and charm. If her photography was music, it would sound like Beethoven, Sinatra and the Beatles combined…”
Miss Pamela Des Barres, Author, Founder, Groupie Couture, Venice Beach, California

“Coming from nearly 20 years as a professional graphic designer and now a full-time, fine arts painter, I have always appreciated the style and care in which Vicki has portrayed in her photo works. Her images transcend the usual “pretty picture” snapshot… capturing another level of thought passion and narrative. They are scenes that I can get lost in and the more I look, the more they tell me. Truly works of art and passion.”

Rainy May

Rainy May

It has been raining for days and I know what this means…super verdant abundant green. Central New York has a short spring summer season but it makes up in lushness what it lacks in length and these rains are integral to the process. So, I’ll lay in bed a little longer on a Sunday morning…best to get out of nature’s way while she is percolating.

iPhoneography & the black and white via Henri Cartier-Bresson

i love you

“Photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth which can make them come back again.”

~Henri Cartier-Bresson

Lately, I have been pushing myself to get better at black and white photography. A good black and white photo seems a poem compared to the novella you find in most of my color photographs. Simple is better. Clear, clean, brilliant, illuminated and ecclesiastical helps.

Here are my most recent attempts.

Best,

V
